The representation of danger

Jörmungand is a giant snake, son of Loki and the giantess Angbroda, he is also the brother of Fenrir and the mistress of the dead Hel. The prophecy announces that the damage he will cause to the gods will be so devastating that the gods are wary of him.

Shortly after his birth, Jörmungand will be thrown by Odin into the sea that surrounds Midgard, so great is the danger he represents. The snake will grow so large that it will eventually circle Midgard and bite its own tail, forming a magnificent Ouroboros. This is where its popular nickname comes from: the Midgard serpent.

Thor's rival

Jörmungand is often portrayed as the rival of the famous Thor, not least because of the two most famous legends about them.

One day, while fishing with Heimdall, Thor decided to venture deep into the sea that surrounds Midgard, that day he used a bull's head as a hook and ended up fishing Jörmungand. A titanic battle ensued between the god of thunder and the giant snake, which was interrupted by Heimdall, who cut the rope out of fear.

Their second famous encounter takes place at Ragnarök, which is the final battle between the gods and the giants. On that day, Thor will go to fight Jörmungand. The fight was hard, but so was the result: Thor finished off the snake before dying of its venom.
